Redesign HK
Reimagine Hong Kong. Build towards a better future.
Redesign 2022-23 has ended. Please check back here for future rounds.
A design thinking challenge created by students for students.
This is not a start-up competition.
Instead, this is a challenge for all students to better understand the community we live in and develop a set of tools that will enable us to effectively create positive change. Through a 5 step design thinking framework, you can learn how to approach real-world problems, innovate creative ideas, and drive positive impact, whether in science, art, or business.
As Gen Zs ourselves, we know how much creativity and passion each of you has. We also know that there are times when we feel limited by our age and lack of experience. Got ideas, insights, or just a perspective? This is your chance to unleash your creativity—for a better Hong Kong.

How This Challenge Works
The Challenge will revolve around the guiding question
“How Might We Build Towards a Better Hong Kong?”
Participants will go through the 5 design thinking stages*:
Empathize (2-3 weeks suggested):
In this stage, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the community and the issues faced by engaging with residents through observations, interviews, surveys, and focus groups.Define (1 week suggested):
Participants will organize the ideas collected in the emphasize stage by defining a problem statement (“How might we…”), which will be used for finding solutions in later stages.Ideate (1-2 weeks suggested):
Participants will generate ideas to solve the problem outlined in the problem statement. Participants are encouraged to come up with as many ideas as possible before selecting the best one to move forward with. Possible solutions include artwork, films, events, products, service, businesses, and campaigns!Prototype (1-3 weeks suggested):
Participants will develop their ideas into a working model. These prototypes are simply sample versions of a product, feature, or service. The aim is to have something tangible to test on real users, so they are meant to be rough!Test (2-3 weeks suggested):
Participants will test out the prototype with a group of users and gather feedback. Participants will note down observations on the whole process and reflect on ways to improve.
A challenge toolkit containing more information and resources for each stage will be provided upon registration.
Submission Checkpoints:
Submit a problem statement (by Nov 30)
Submit a 3-5 minute summary video of the process (by Jan 8)
All teams will be reviewed according to the following criteria: empathy, creativity, thoughtfulness, feasibility, and need. Additional details regarding these criteria may be provided during the competition.
*All stages of this challenge will take place asychronously.
